The Importance of Sunglasses
Just as the sun’s UV (ultraviolet) rays can damage the skin, so they can also damage the eyes. The sun can burn the eye’s cornea, and long-term exposure can cause eye disease, especially cataracts.
Not all sunglasses block UV rays. Some simply darken the light. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a private, not-for-profit organization founded in 1918. It works with the norms and guidelines, and accreditations which impact businesses of every type, helping American business to be more globally competitive.
ANSI has set standards for effective sunglasses. Ideally, sunglasses should block both UVA rays (by 95%) and UVB rays (by 99%). In addition, you can choose:
- Photochromic lenses – which protect from glare and UV radiation without impairing acuity or distorting color
- Polycarbonate lenses – which block UV radiation and protect from sports or other injuries
- Polarized lenses – which protect from glare, but make sure they also have a UV-blocking feature as well
Some sunglasses block blue light. This helps against glare, but these lenses also block red and amber light, which makes traffic light colors hard to distinguish.
