Periodontics

Sacramento, Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Stockton, Modesto, California

Periodontics is the specialty of dentistry that studies supporting structures of teeth, along with the diseases and conditions that affect them. It is one of eight dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. Periodontology also involves researching new techniques for treating periodontal diseases.

The role of a periodontist

A periodontist is a specially trained dentist who specializes in assessing, diagnosing and treating periodontal or gum disease. He or she also specializes in the placement of dental implants, and in gum procedures to either enhance the aesthetics of your gum line or to prepare for cosmetic dental surgery.

Periodontists receive extensive specialized training, including three years of additional training beyond dental school. This enables them to learn about the most recent advances in science and technology in order to better diagnose and treat periodontal disease.

About periodontal disease

Periodontal diseases are infections of the gums that—over time—destroy the support of your natural teeth. There are numerous aspects of periodontal disease that require different treatment approaches.

The leading cause of gum disease today is plaque build-up. Plaque is a sticky, colorless film that sticks to your teeth at the gum line. Plaque is constantly forming on your teeth.

If not carefully removed by daily brushing and flossing, plaque will harden into a rough, porous substance known as calculus (or tartar). Only by thorough daily brushing and flossing can you remove these germs and help prevent periodontal disease.

Statistics reveal that adults over the age of 35 lose more teeth periodontal disease than from cavities. In fact, three out of four adults are affected by gum disease at some point in their lifetime.

Identifying periodontal disease

Bacteria found in plaque produce toxins or poisons that will irritate your gum line. This can make them turn red and swollen, and bleed when you brush. If you notice this irritation, you should see a dentist immediately. Prolonging this condition will cause your gums separate from your teeth, resulting in pockets or spaces.

As this disease progresses, your supporting gum tissue and bone that holds your teeth in place will start to deteriorate. If this still goes untreated, tooth loss will ensue.

Other factors that can negatively impact healthy gums include:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Stress
  • Clenching and grinding teeth
  • Medication
  • Poor nutrition
