Dental Appliances to Treat Sleep Apnea

Sacramento, Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Stockton, Modesto, California

Snoring can be more serious than an embarrassment or a social nuisance. It can indicate the serious and potentially dangerous condition of obstructive sleep apnea.

There are several different ways Dr. Miller can help you deal with your sleep apnea. The most commonly prescribed treatment is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).

About CPAP

A CPAP device involves a mask, tubes and a fan. Using air pressure, it pushed your tongue forward, away from your airway, and opens your throat. This motion enables air to pass through your airway, thereby reducing snoring and preventing disruptions during sleep.

For many patients, CPAP therapy dramatically improves their energy levels during the day, along with their overall health. You should wear your CPAP device whenever you sleep, even for a short nap. While CPAP is not a cure, this noninvasive form of therapy is a safe and effective way to manage obstructive sleep apnea.

SomnoDent MAS

Another option for treating sleep apnea is SomnoDent MAS. Using a Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) that treats both snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, this device works by advancing your lower jaw forward to alleviate snoring. This device features high quality, stainless steel screws on the side of the appliance to provide incremental levels of jaw advancement. This optimizes the effectiveness and comfort-level of treatment, because you jaw is moved only as far as it takes to improve your symptoms.

This device is small—it can fit into the palm of your hand and allows you to open and close your mouth normally.

Surgical options

Sleep apnea can also be treated surgically. Please keep in mind that the costs and success rates associated with surgery can vary significantly, and a high success rate is not guaranteed. If you are interested with pursuing surgical options, you should research and learn as much as you can about the benefits and risks.
